The WEST AFRICAN EXAMINATIONS COUNCIL [WAEC] just released the 2021 WEST AFRICAN SENIOR SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION RESULTS [WASSCE] and according to Patrick Areghan, the Head of the Nigeria National Office of the Examination Body, the examination was on for a duration of 7 weeks (a month and 3 weeks) and there was an amazing improvement in overall performances by candidates, as most candidates secured credits in Five Subjects including the chief subjects - Mathematics and English Language.
Mr. Patrick Areghan in an official press conference held earlier on today gave a breakdown of the examination and the results and this is summarized as follows:
- Over 1.5 million (precisely - 1, 560, 261) persons/candidates sat the exams across Five Countries/West African States and they include: GHANA, NIGERIA, SIERRA LEONE, THE GAMBIA and LIBERIA.
- A total of 89.62% candidates got credits and above in at least five subjects. This percentage accounts for exactly 1, 398, 370 candidates.
- 1, 274, 784 candidates made credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, Mathematics and English Language inclusive. This makes up about 81.7%.
- Compared to the 2020 SSCE Results and overall performance, the number of candidates who made credits and above in a minimum of five subjects were 65.24% of the total number of applicants. Hence, there is an improvement on this to the tune of 16.46% this year.
Mr. Patrick Areghan also quipped that there were a lot of security challenges which affected the SSCE such as:
- The sit-at-home Order in the South-East
- Banditry
- Kidnapping
- Insurgency in the North
- The Covid-19 Pandemic etc.
