Things You Probably Did Not Know About the SSCE?

The SSCE - Senior School Certificate Exams is a West African Examination conducted strictly for terminal students in the SS3. This exam is conducted by a body or organization known as WAEC - the West African Examinations Council. This exam cuts across all key subjects in a candidate's field of choice i.e. whether Science, Social Science or Arts, with English and Mathematics being compulsory for all. In this post I will be introducing you to the SSCE English Language Exam Structure and Questions. 



WAEC ENGLISH 

In the SSCE, the English Language is divided into three main categories namely:

  • Paper One - Objective Style Questions 
  • Paper Two - Continuous Assessment 
  • Paper Three - Test of Orals 





PAPER I or ENGLISH LANGUAGE 1

This is the 'objective style questions' and it has the following features:

  • it has a total of 80 carefully selected questions shared into SIX SECTIONS 
  • it contains questions on LEXIS, STRUCTURE and REGISTERS 
  • it has options lettered A-D or A-E as the case may be 
  • although it is termed 'paper one', it is taken after 'paper two'




PAPER II or ENGLISH LANGUAGE 2 

This paper is usually the first and candidates begin the SSCE English yearly with 'paper II'. It is used to test candidates 'reading' and 'writing' skills. Hence, knowledge of the following topical areas are necessary:

  • letter writing - both formal and informal 
  • speech writing 
  • essay writing 
  • story writing 
  • comprehension 

Record has it that the paper II carries the lion's share of marks i.e. the largest mark in the exam. 





PAPER III or ENGLISH LANGUAGE 3 

This is the 'Test of Orals Paper'. Here, your phonetic skills are tested in the following areas:

  • Vowel sounds 
  • Consonant sounds 
  • Stress - Primary, Word, Emphatic and Syllabic 
  • Rhymes 
  • Intonation 


Any sane and smart candidate is expected to digest all of the above areas in order to perform valiantly in the SSCE English Language Paper. Let me make a list of all 'SSCE Topics' that you're expected to study and master before the exams.
