The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Exams is an annual academic convention organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. The UTME is regarded as one of the most important, pre-university or pre-tertiary institution admission requirements, for young secondary school leavers and other adults.
Brief History of JAMB and the UTME
JAMB came in at a time when the establishment of tertiary institutions in Nigeria necessitated the setting up of entrance examinations into these schools. This becomes more understandable if one considers the teeming population of youths seeking admission into these tertiary institutions. Hitherto, each institution used to conduct entrance examinations in line with their autonomous status. This process was called concessional admission. It was in 1978 that the Federal Government of Nigeria established the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) to harmonize admissions into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
Exam Structure
The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination has witnessed several changes up till this very moment and may witness more as the years go by.
Before now, UTME candidates sat a total of 4 subjects depending on their fields of study and these subjects had a stipulated number of questions attached.
- The Use of English - 100 Questions
- Other three subjects - 50 Questions each [summing up to 150]
- This makes a total of 250 UTME Questions for every candidate
However, in recent times, the following changes have been effected:
- The Use of English - 60 Questions
- Other three subjects - 40 Questions each [summing up to 120]
- This makes up a total of 180 UTME Questions for every candidate
JAMB SYLLABUS
Due to the structure of the UTME, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board made a list of all subjects and what to expect, in order to guide candidates during preparations. The JAMB Syllabus contains:
- All Sections for each subject
- All topics you are to study in preparation for the exam, under a particular subject
